Here is the honest answer: gold itself never tarnishes. Gold plating is a microscopically thin skin of it, and what sits underneath decides everything. This is why plated jewellery tarnishes, how long it actually lasts, and how to slow it right down.
Does Gold Plated Jewellery Tarnish?
So, does gold plated tarnish? Yes — gold plated jewellery tarnishes, but the gold is not what tarnishes. The thin gold layer wears through or lets moisture past, the base metal underneath reacts with air, sweat and chemicals, and that reaction shows through as dullness, dark patches or a green mark on your skin.
That single fact explains everything else on this page. Why It Tarnishes (The Gold Is Innocent)
Gold is one of the least reactive elements there is. The Royal Society of Chemistry describes it plainly as chemically unreactive — it will not dissolve in anything short of aqua regia. Britannica notes it is among the noblest of the transition elements and is not attacked by oxygen or sulfur, which is exactly why it does not tarnish or corrode, and why gold artefacts come out of tombs looking like they went in yesterday.
So pure gold cannot tarnish. Tarnish is a reaction between a metal and its environment — oxygen, moisture, sulfur compounds in the air, salt and acid in your sweat. Gold sits those reactions out. Copper, brass, nickel and silver do not.
Now the catch. As the RSC also notes, electroplating covers another metal with a very thin layer of gold. Thin is the operative word. Plating is measured in microns — thousandths of a millimetre. Once that skin wears through at the points that rub (clasps, ring shanks, the underside of a pendant), the reactive metal beneath is exposed to your skin and the air, and it does what reactive metals do.

"Gold plated" is not one thing. There are four tiers with genuinely different lifespans, and in the US the labels are defined by the Federal Trade Commission's jewellery guides. This is where most of the confusion — and most of the disappointment — comes from.
Under 16 CFR Part 23, a piece can be marked "gold plated" or "gold electroplate" once the plating is 10 karat gold or finer and just 0.175 microns thick — roughly seven millionths of an inch. To be called "heavy gold electroplate", the same rules require 2.5 microns. That is more than fourteen times thicker for the same two-word category most shoppers read as identical.

Vermeil is the one worth knowing. Under 16 CFR 23.4 a piece only qualifies if the base is sterling silver, the gold is at least 10 karat, and the layer is at least 2.5 microns. It is the only plating tier where the law dictates the base metal — which is precisely why vermeil never turns your finger green. There is no copper in it to do that. Gold filled is different again: the gold is bonded on mechanically rather than electroplated, and must make up at least one twentieth of the item's weight. It has to be disclosed — but the fact the rule exists tells you it happens. What Is Underneath: The Metal That Decides Everything

This is not just jeweller folklore. The FTC guides restrict who may call a product "corrosion resistant" or "rust proof" at all, and 16 CFR 23.11 names the metals that can genuinely be considered corrosion and rust resistant: pure nickel, gold alloys of 10 karat and above, and austenitic stainless steels. Brass and copper are conspicuously not on that list.
Why Plated Jewellery Turns Your Skin Green
The green is copper. When the plating wears through on a brass or copper-based piece, copper meets the moisture, salt and acids in your sweat and forms copper salts — which are green, and transfer straight onto your skin. It is harmless, it washes off, and it is telling you the gold layer has been breached.
Two things worth separating here, because people conflate them:
- Green skin is copper — a stain, not an allergy. A base metal with no copper in it cannot do this, which is why vermeil and steel-based pieces do not.
- An itchy red rash is usually nickel — a genuine allergic reaction. Nickel is the most common cause of jewellery contact allergy; the American Academy of Dermatology estimates more than 18% of people in North America react to it. It is often used as an underplating beneath the gold, so it can surface as the layer wears.
If your skin goes green, the fix is not more polishing. The plating has already worn through at that point, and polishing removes what little gold is left. It is a re-plate or a replace.

Honestly? Anywhere from a few weeks to a few decades, which is why the question frustrates everyone. The variables are thickness, base metal, and how hard you wear it.

Placement matters as much as the piece. A plated ring takes constant abrasion from your hands, keys and pockets, so it wears fastest. How to Keep Gold Plated Jewellery From Tarnishing
You cannot stop plating wearing eventually — it is a consumable surface. But most plated jewellery dies years early, and that part is avoidable. In rough order of impact:
Take it off for water
Showering, swimming and washing up are the biggest killers. Chlorine and salt water are the worst of them, and soap leaves a film that dulls the finish even before the plating goes. Plated is not the same as waterproof, whatever the listing says.
Last on, first off
Perfume, aftershave, sunscreen, deodorant and moisturiser all attack plating. Put your jewellery on after they are dry, and take it off before bed. This one habit does more than any polishing routine.
Wipe it down after wearing
Sweat is acidic and salty — it sits on the metal and works at it overnight. Ten seconds with a soft dry cloth after you take a piece off removes the sweat and body oils. Store it dry, dark and separate
Humidity drives tarnish, and friction against other jewellery scratches the layer open. An airtight bag or a lined box, one piece per pouch, kept out of the bathroom. An anti-tarnish strip helps if you live somewhere humid.
Rotate your pieces
The most underrated tip. Plating wears with contact time, so wearing one chain every single day for a year is a much harder life than rotating three. It also means the piece you love most lasts longest.
Skip the nail polish trick
Clear nail polish as a barrier coat is all over the internet. It does technically slow contact — but it yellows, chips unevenly, and traps moisture underneath, and getting it off means solvents that attack the plating. Buy better plating instead of sealing bad plating.
The single best defence is bought, not maintained: thicker plating over a non-reactive base.
