You take the ring off and there it is: a green band around your finger. The internet immediately tells you that your silver is fake.
It almost certainly is not. The green is coming from the 7.5% of your sterling silver that is not silver — and that 7.5% is there because the law says it has to be. Here is what is actually happening on your skin.
Does Sterling Silver Turn Green?
The silver does not. Your skin sometimes does. Sterling silver can leave a green mark where it touches you — but the green is not the silver, and it is not a sign of a fake.
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metal, which is almost always copper. Silver is nearly unreactive. Copper is not. When that copper meets the moisture, salt and acids in your sweat, it forms green copper compounds that rub straight off onto your skin.
So the honest answer to does sterling silver turn green is: the metal itself stays silver, and a green mark on you is the copper doing exactly what copper does. It is harmless, it washes off, and it happens to some people and never to others.

Why: It Is the Copper, Not the Silver
So why does sterling silver turn green, and why does sterling silver turn my skin green when it leaves your mate alone? Both answers start in the same place. Pure silver is too soft to make jewellery from. It bends, it scratches, it will not hold a setting. So it gets alloyed with a harder metal, and for sterling that metal is copper. The Royal Society of Chemistry puts it plainly: sterling silver contains 92.5% silver, and the rest is copper or another metal.
That copper is what reacts. The RSC's chemistry educators have written about this exact question: copper reacts with sulfur in polluted air to form sulfides and sulfates, with salt water to form chlorides, and with the sweat on your skin to form chelates. Those compounds are various shades of blue to green and build a thin layer — a patina — of copper carbonate, known as verdigris. And because that patina is so thin, it brushes off easily. Onto your finger.
That is the entire mechanism. The green on your skin is a microscopically thin layer of copper compounds that transferred off the metal. It is sitting on you, not in you.
The silver, meanwhile, is doing almost nothing. Britannica notes that silver does not react with moist air or dry oxygen at all. It only tarnishes when it meets sulfur or hydrogen sulfide. Which brings us to the thing that trips everybody up.
Green Skin and Black Tarnish Are Not the Same Thing
These get treated as one phenomenon constantly, including by people who should know better. They are two different reactions, involving two different metals, producing two different colours, in two different places.
Black tarnish is silver reacting with sulfur compounds in the air to form silver sulfide. It sits on the jewellery, it dulls the shine, and a polishing cloth takes it off. It has nothing to do with your skin.
Green skin is copper reacting with your sweat. It sits on you, not the piece, and soap and water takes it off.
You can have one without the other. A piece can go black in a drawer without ever marking your finger, and a piece can mark your finger daily while staying bright. Does It Mean My Silver Is Fake?

"Sterling silver" is not a vibe, it is a legal standard. Under 16 CFR 23.5, the words "Sterling Silver", "Sterling", "solid silver" or the abbreviation "Ster." cannot be used to describe a product unless it is at least 925 parts per thousand pure silver. That is where the 925 stamp comes from.
Which answers the 925 versions directly. Does 925 sterling silver turn skin green, or does 925 sterling silver turn your finger green? It can — for exactly the reason that number is on the piece. Read that the other way round and the penny drops. If a piece is genuinely sterling, it is 92.5% silver — which means roughly 7.5% of it is something else, and in the overwhelming majority of jewellery that something else is copper. Almost nothing about quality. It tells you there is copper in the piece (true of all sterling), that your skin chemistry is on the reactive side, and that the two have been in contact while damp. It is not a purity test, and no reputable jeweller would treat it as one.
Why It Happens to You and Not Your Mate
Two people can wear identical rings and get completely different results. That is not the jewellery, it is the interface between the jewellery and you.
- Sweat chemistry. The reaction needs moisture, salt and acid. More acidic sweat, or simply more of it, drives it faster. This shifts with diet, hormones, medication, stress and heat.
- Humidity. Warm, humid and coastal climates accelerate everything. The same ring can be fine all winter and mark you every day in February in Brisbane.
- What is on your skin. Lotions, sunscreen, perfume, hand sanitiser and cleaning products all change the pH at the contact point, and most of them push it the wrong way.
- Fit and friction. A snug ring traps moisture against the skin and rubs the patina off as it moves. A loose bangle does neither.
None of these are faults, and none of them are fixable in the sense of making your body stop being your body. They are just the variables — which is why the fixes below are about controlling contact and moisture rather than changing your chemistry.
Green stain or allergic reaction?
Worth separating, because they get conflated and only one of them matters medically.
A green stain is a smooth, painless discolouration that wipes off. It is cosmetic. A rash — itchy, red, raised, sometimes blistering, and staying put after you wash — is an allergic contact reaction, and the usual culprit is nickel rather than copper. The American Academy of Dermatology notes nickel is the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis, affecting more than 18% of people in North America. Good sterling should not contain nickel, but cheap "silver-tone" jewellery frequently does. If you have a rash rather than a stain, take the piece off and see a doctor rather than reaching for a polishing cloth.
Fingers, Necks, Ears and Wrists
The same reaction, but where you wear a piece changes how likely you are to see it. Moisture plus contact plus friction is the recipe, and some spots serve all three.

Two things worth flagging in that table. "Nickel silver" and "German silver" contain no silver whatsoever — they are copper alloys with a silvery colour and a misleading name, and they are a frequent cause of both green marks and genuine rashes. And stainless steel is the quiet answer for anyone who reacts to everything: no copper, so no verdigris, and no polishing routine either.
How to Stop It (And Get It Off)
The reaction needs copper, moisture and time in contact. You cannot remove the copper, so take away the other two.
Keep it dry
The single highest-impact habit, and it is unglamorous: take rings off before you wash your hands, shower, swim or do the dishes. Water trapped under a band with a film of soap is the ideal reaction chamber. Dry the piece and the skin properly if it does get wet.
Jewellery on last, off first
Lotion, sunscreen, perfume and hand sanitiser all shift your skin pH and leave residue. Let them dry before the silver goes on, and take the silver off before bed.
Clean the piece, not just your skin
The verdigris builds on the metal before it transfers to you. Wiping a piece with a soft dry cloth after wearing removes the sweat and the beginnings of that layer. A silver polishing cloth handles tarnish at the same time.
Give it a night off
Rotating pieces cuts contact time, which is the variable doing the most work. A ring worn four days a week marks far less than the same ring worn seven.
About the clear nail polish trick
You will find this recommended everywhere, including on the version of this page we just replaced. It does work, in the narrow sense that a barrier between copper and skin stops the transfer. But be clear about what you are signing up for: it chips unevenly within days, it traps moisture underneath where you cannot see it, it yellows, and it needs stripping and redoing constantly. As a fix before an event, fine. As a way of life, you are better off with a rhodium-plated piece, an Argentium one, or steel.
If the green is already there
Soap and water gets most of it. The stain sits on the surface of your skin and nothing has soaked in, so it lifts easily — a little rubbing alcohol or a non-acetone remover shifts anything stubborn. There is no urgency and no harm; it fades on its own regardless.
If your skin marks and it bothers you, the realistic options are: wear it drier, plate it, switch to a low-copper silver, or switch to steel. What does not work is buying "better" sterling — all sterling is 92.5% silver by law, so there is no copper-free version of it to upgrade to.
